Sixties Decade Top 40 Songs on Christmas Day
(The link to play the jukebox is at the bottom)
Christmases of the sixties were so memorable in many ways. I recall the festive family gatherings, the excitement and
anticipation of the arrival of Christmas, going Christmas shopping with my girlfriend, and of course the vacation from school which then was
called Christmas vacation and not winter break.
During this break from our studies, it gave us more time to spend with our friends, play basketball, sandlot
football and of course continued to listen and groove to the top 40 countdown. We still cruised and cranked up the radio no
matter if it was wet and cold or even snow. It was just a special time of the year. The aroma of Mom baking cookies and making home
made candy was and always will be a fond memory of the Christmas season of the sixties.
For nostalgia sake, I thought I would present the top forty songs as they appeared in billboard magazine on Christmas
Day for the 60s decade. The shocking or maybe disappointing aspect of the top 4 songs of each year, was that none of them were
Christmas songs. Some that came close was the reissue of Bing Crosby's "White Christmas in 1961 that reached number 20, "Jingle Bell Rock"
by Bobby Rydell and Chubby Checker of the same year that was ranked at 27 on Christmas Day. In 1962 The 4 Seasons' "Santa Claus Is Coming
To Town" was number 23 on Christmas. Roy Orbison's hit "Pretty Paper" written by Willie Nelson, was number 19 on Billboard.
As the sixties continued to march to the end of the decade, Christmas music failed to make its mark on the top 40. What
was once a fad in the 50s and early 60s had disappeared.
So lets take a look at the top four songs on Christmas Day for every year of the sixities
decade.
