Baby Boomers' Greatest Summer Hits

SummerSummer is the greatest time of the year and the 50s and 60s summers were no exception.

When we baby boomers were in High School, Junior High or Middle School, we all couldn't wait for school to let out and summer vacation to begin. Teens today are no different in that respect. The music of the baby boomers' era reflected the excitement of summer and what we all looked forward doing from "rooting for the Yankees in the bleachers, don't have to worry about teachers...." as sung in the song "School Is Out" by Gary U.S. Bonds. Take for example the song "Here Comes Summer," by Jerry Keller, "We'll go swimming everyday."

60s Summer HitsThe summer song "(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet" by the Reflections, has the lyrics of summer "take my girl datin' at the drive-in" also exemplifies on how we looked forward to summer with more time for our girlfriends and boyfriends. If you take a poll whether it be baby boomers or others, summer would be the season most voted as the favorite. Some of the best music was and still is released during the summer months. More movies are released during those months so many soundtracks which include hits from those movies result in those songs sky rocketing to the top especially if the movie is a hit.

Summer presented a time to take your favorite music to the beach, pool, or crusin', listening to your favorite songs. The 60s was a time when AM radio was king and we took it with us wherever we ventured.

Summer was a time to be melancholy and full of life. School was out and it was our time to be lazy and enjoy the leisure time even if we didn't do anything but lay under a tree with friends talking and sharing stories and laughter. This was a great memory and a big part of the enjoyment of summer as were pickup games of baseball, whiffle ball, foil ball. I recall going to the city pool nearly every day (when the weather permitted it) and hanging out with my friends while listening to the jukebox that played music over a speaker system that you could hear from any place around the pool.

Most weekends we went cruisin' around town making all the stops, playing the radio as loud as permitted. (Back then you could get ticketed for disturbing the peace if you played your radio or stereo too loud.)  The road trips planned and unplanned also made the summer a special time.

Dating at the drive-ins, going to the lake, and the lazy and crazy fun times bring back the memories of the great summer music of the 50s and 60s. I have compiled what I believe the greatest songs of summer for us baby boomers who grew up in the 50s and 60s. Sit back and play non-stop the songs that bring back the summers of baby boomers past. Summer would not be summer without the music of The Beach Boys, Jan & Dean and The Lovin' Spoonful just to name a few.

Do you have a great memory of a great summer that you would like to share with us? Email me at the60sofficialsite@verizon.net and I will add it to 60s Memories From Our Visitors. If a special song rings in your mind from summers past tell me about it. Don't be shy we all love to look back to our youth while we still can.

Let me listen to the greatest summer hits of the 50s and 60s.
